Working in the gaming industry isn't as simple as just being hired to code a game, there are many other areas needed to make a game. A few of these roles would include:
- Designer
- Artist
- Programmer
- Level Designer
- Sound engineer
- Beta Tester
Each of these roles require a specific skill, Designer would mean you'd need some artistic talent for thumbnail sketches (its only ideas) and a good knowledge of coding. Artist would mean you would need to be good at drawing and have skills in art programmes such as Photoshop, these are the people who do the concept art you see in the promos. A programmer would need to know a majority about coding although you wouldn't need to know everything since there would be a team doing different areas it would still be helpful to know at least over half. Level Designers would also need to be good at Photoshop, Unity and Maya. They build and design the levels you play in so they would need to come up with a design but also build a model which would be practical in a time frame. Sound engineers would need to know about recording in a booth, editing and adjusting sounds. Finally Beta Testers, you don't need a lot of skill to do this since your just playing the game but they should have a keen eye to spot any mistakes and errors that may occur whilst playing the game.
Although majoring in one category is a good idea it would better to expand your skills which gives you a higher chance of being hired by a company. For example i may be employed because i have good skills in Maya and have skills in art and know how to use Photoshop. I could develop these skills which would give me a better chance at being hired compared to others who may or may not have these skills.
